Amigues. in RPh 72, 1998, 125, who stresses that the plant is deadly. Suggestion to identify the first element with ἐσθλός; Girard, Connaissance...l'hellébore 1988 assumes original ἑλλο-, which is hardly correct. The etymology seems very doubtful to me; the word could well be non-IE, i.e. Pre-Greek. The double - λλ- will represent the phoneme -l^y-, which at the same time explains the two first ε's: \/a\/ was pronounced [ä] in contact with the palatalized l, and [ä] is reproduced by ε; after the β it may have become ο; sowe have \/al^yabar-\/.

Etymology: From the oblique forms of the Skt. word for `head', e. g. gen. sg. śīrṣṇ-ás with the adverbial ablativ śīrṣa-tás (a \< n̥), which represent a with n enlarged monosyll. zero grade (śīrṣ-n- \< *ḱr̥h₂-s-n-) from the disyll. nom.-acc. śíras- (Av. sarah-, \< *ḱr̥h₂-os), it appears that κρά̄ατος represents an original *κρά̄σα-τος \< (ḱr̥h₂s-n̥tos); through contraction this gave κρᾱτός (acc. to Zenodot. κρητός). (cf. αἴθυια: αἴθω) we get a stem μαθ-, which got a το-suffix in μάσταξ (\< μαθ-τ-); s. v. -- A remarkable formal similarity is shown by synonymous Lat. mandō, - ere `chew', which can represent a nasalized IE * madh- (= μαθ-), cf. Leumann Lat. Gr. 313). If Germ., e.g. OHG mindel, OWNo. mēl n. `bit of the bridle' (IE * ment-), Goth. munÞs 'mouth' (IE *mn̥t-) would belong here, μαθ- could be the zero grade of it (with aspiration of the tenuis); but they must rather be connected with Welsh mant `jaw, mouth', Lat. mentum `jaw'. Doubtful is the rendering of Skt. math- (mostly `beat up, stir, rub') with `tear up, feed on' in AV 5, 8, 4 etc. (Specht Ursprung 254 after Oertel), s. Backformation from πειράομαι (Sommer Nominalkomp. 118 as alternative) is certainly possible, but the formation of the verb then remains unclear. -- Certain cognates presents only Latin in perī-tus `experience', perī-culum `attempt, danger, proces', ex-perior, - īrī `try, put to the test', of which the ī-element seems to be connected with the Greek suffix. Arm. p` orj `attempt', if with Meillet BSL 36, 110 to be connected, must represent an aspirated (expressive) anlaut. Fire appears mostly as a means used by God to execute punishment: in the past, in the case of Sodom ἔβρεξεν πῦρ καὶ θεῖον ἀπʼ οὐρανοῦ Lk 17:29 (Gen 19:24; cp. 1QH 3:31). Cp. Oft. in Rv: fire is cast fr. heaven upon the earth 8:5; 13:13; 20:9 (καταβαίνω 1b). It proceeds fr. the mouths of God’s two witnesses 11:5 and fr. the mouths of plague-bringing horses 9:17f. Jos As 12, 10 ἄβυσσον τοῦ πυρός); cp. Rv 21:8; 14:10, 18; 15:2. The fiery place of punishment as ἡ κάμινος τοῦ πυρός Mt 13:42, 50 (difft. AcPl Ha 6, 20 see at the end of a, above). τὸ πῦρ ἐστι μετʼ αὐτοῦ fire awaits that person AcPlCor 2:37. The fire of hell is also meant in certain parables and allegories, in which trees and vines represent persons worthy of punishment Mt 3:10; 7:19; Lk 3:9; J 15:6. The one whose coming was proclaimed by John the Baptist βαπτίσει ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ πυρί; whether πῦρ in Mt 3:11; Lk 3:16 refers to reception of the Holy Spirit (esp. in Lk 3:16) or to the fire of divine judgment is debatable; for association of πῦρ with πνεῦμα s. Ac 2:3f; AcPlCor 2:13 (βαπτίζω 3b). As Lord of Judgment God is called πῦρ καταναλίσκον Hb 12:29 (Dt 4:24; 9:3.—Mesomedes calls Isis πῦρ τέλεον ἄρρητον [IAndrosIsis p. 145, 14]).—Of a different kind is the idea that fire is to be worshiped as a god (Maximus Tyr. 2, 4b of the Persians: πῦρ δέσποτα; Theosophien 14 p. 170, 11 τὸ πῦρ ἀληθῶς θεός) Dg 8:2.

① a material object used to meet some need in an occupation or other responsibility, gener. thing, object used for any purpose at all (e.g. a table: Diod S 17, 66, 5) Mk 11:16 (PCasey, CBQ 59, ’97, 306–32). σκεῦος ἐλεφάντινον or ἐκ ξύλου Rv 18:12ab. Pl. (Diod S 13, 12, 6) Dg 2:2–4. Of all one has (Jos., Vi. 68; 69) τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ his property Lk 17:31.—Mt 12:29; Mk 3:27 (both in allusion to Is 49:24f).—By an added statement or via the context σκ. can become an object of a certain specific kind: τὰ σκεύη τῆς λειτουργίας the equipment used in cultic service Hb 9:21 (ParJer 3:9; 11:18; cp. TestNapht 8:6 ὁ διάβολος οἰκειοῦται αὐτὸν ὡς ἴδιον σκεῦος; ApcMos 16 γενοῦ μοι σκεῦος; and the magical prayer in FPradel, Griech. u. südital. Gebete1907, p. 9, 11f ἐξορκίζω σε ἐξελθεῖν ἀπὸ τοῦ σκεύους τούτου) Hm 5, 1, 2. The former interpr. is supported by passages cited at the beg. of this section 3, and the latter is in accord w. rabb. usage (Billerb. III 632f. S. also κτάομαι 1). Also probable for 1 Th 4:4 is ‘penis’ (so Antistius [I A.D.] in Anthol. Plan. 4, 243; Aelian, NA 17, 11; cp. the euphemistic Lat. ‘vasa’ in this sense: Plautus, Poenulus. 863; s.
